Cervical epidural steroid injection procedures are injections administered to relieve pain in the neck, shoulders and arms caused by a pinched nerve or inflamed nerve(s) in the cervical spine. Conditions such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis or arthritis can compress and pinch nerves, causing inflammation and pain. The cervical epidural steroid injection procedure involves injections into the surrounding area that help with pinched nerve pain management and decrease the swelling of the inflamed or pinched nerve(s), in addition to reducing inflammation. Although rare, risks of the cervical epidural steroid injection procedure may include infection, allergic reaction to the medication, spinal headache, nerve damage, and prolonged increase in pain.

This procedure takes place in our office and generally takes less than half an hour. You’ll remain awake and receive a local anesthetic, so you’ll feel no discomfort during the treatment. The doctor will use fluoroscopy (a type of X-ray) to see exactly where to place the needle and confirm placement with radiographic contrast (dye). After the procedure, you’ll rest for about 20 minutes while we monitor your condition, then you’re free to go home (have someone drive you) to take it easy for the rest of the day. You may feel a little drowsy or experience some numbness or tingling for a few hours… this is normal. You should be able to return to normal activity the next day.

Following the procedure, patients will be briefly monitored. Patients can return home that day, but physicians may recommend bringing a caregiver to drive patients home. The risk of infection or allergic reaction is low after a cervical epidural steroid injection, but patients should still look out for symptoms including itching, swelling, or increased pain. The injection should alleviate pain symptoms within a few days, but if patients do not feel a decent percentage of pain relief, a Tulsa Pain physician may recommend coming in for repeat injections every couple of weeks in order to feel the full effects of the medication. If the patient still does not feel better, the cervical nerves may not be the true source of the pain and other options may be explored.

General pre/post instructions
Patients can eat a light meal within a few hours before the procedure. If a patient is an insulin dependent diabetic, they must not change their normal eating pattern prior to the procedure. Patients may take their routine medications. (. high blood pressure and diabetic medications). Patients should not take pain medications or anti-inflammatory medications the day of their procedure. Patients have to be hurting prior to this procedure. They may not take medications that may give pain relief or lessen their usual pain. These medicines can be restarted after the procedure if they are needed. If a patient is on Coumadin (blood thinners) or Glucophage (a diabetic medicine) they must notify the office so the timing of these medications can be explained.
