Shoulder steroid injection procedure

If non-surgical treatments do not ease symptoms or the shoulder joint is severely worn causing parts of the joint to become loose, a procedure called an arthroplasty may be recommended. This is a joint replacement treatment which involves replacing the ball with a synthetic ball and placing a cap for the scapula (known as a glenoid). After surgery passive shoulder exercises will be carried out and involve another person moving the joint. After 3-6 weeks patients are advised to start exercising the joint independently. Exercises and stretches are an important part of recovery and help to increase strength, flexibility and mobility in the joint. The success of surgery is dependent on the state of the rotator cuff muscles before surgery and the patient’s commitment to the exercise regime.

As with any medication, there are possible side effects or risks involved.  Common risks from steroid injections include pain at the injection site, bruising due to broken blood vessels, skin discolouration and aggravation of inflammation.  Rarer risks include allergic reactions, infection, tendon rupture and serious injury to bones called necrosis.  Long term side effects (depending on frequency and dose) include thinning of skin, easy bruising, weight gain, puffiness in the face, higher blood pressure, cataract formation, and osteoporosis (reduced bone density).  Steroid injections may be given every 3-4 months but frequent injections may lead to tissue weakening at the injection site and is not recommended.  Side effects do not happen in everyone and vary from person to person.

They are extremely talented and I could not ask for a better knowledgable doctor in his field. He is kind, patient, and takes the time needed to answer your questions and concerns. He has helped me so much. I will have the lumbar operation with him as my doctor. Also, I was referred to Dr. Shapiro in that group who is a knee doctor. I have gotten an MRI now and he prescribed a physical Therapist that is really helping me. This is the third set, the other two were Prescribed by another doctor that I did not get the hands on treatment from. I can not say enough good things about this group of doctors, PAs and their group.

I have since read so many articles on the internet and decided to change to a high anti inflammatory diet with magnesium, omega 3 and vitamin b6 and b12 supplements and tumeric, ginger and honey drink twice a day. I did this for 3 weeks and saw a huge improvement 2 days before I had a saline shot. I think everything I have done has helped dramatically. My Doctor and PT are amazed at my quick recovery. I am also doing alot of home exercises to keep the rotation and strengthen my shoulder. I believe that the food we eat plays an even bigger role in healing the body. Sports activities that require repeating overhead movements like lifting weights, swimming, throwing or pitching, and swinging of the arms put a lot of strain on the shoulder. Even regular, everyday activities can damage the shoulder such as gardening, hanging curtains, or even scrubbing the floors or walls.
