Synthesis and secretion of steroid hormones

Any maneuver that increases the cytosolic calcium concentration in renin-secreting cells either by inducing calcium release from intracellular stores or by enhancing transmembrane calcium influx potently inhibits renin release. 29 The inhibitory effect of the calcium pathway is strong enough to overcome any stimulatory effect of the cAMP signaling pathway. A likely explanation for this ying and yang effect of cAMP and calcium on renin release results from the effect of calcium to lower cAMP levels in renin-secreting cells by inhibiting adenylate cyclase activity 30 , 31 and by activating cAMP phosphodiesterase activity. 32 Established mobilizers of calcium in renin-secreting cells are ANG II 33 and endothelin. 34 Recently, evidence was provided that also an increase in perfusion pressure of the afferent arterioles increases the calcium concentration in juxtaglomerular cells. 35
